KENT CITY — Reed City went 4-1 on the mats at the Kent City Classic wrestling tournament on Saturday.

The Coyotes beat Forest Hills Eastern, 54-34, before losing to Kent City, 44-33. The Coyotes bounced back to beat Fremont, 57-22, Holland, 45-29, and Ludington, 63-18, to close out the day.

Nathaniel Fasbender (152 pounds), Troy Giese (171) and Matt McGahey (130) all went 5-0 on the day to earn all-tournament honors while Thayne Stieg (140), Evan Skiver (285), Chandler Lawson (103), Devin Ward (189) and Dylan Chrispell (215) all went 4-1.

The Coyotes return to the mat on Wednesday at Pine River and are at South Haven on Saturday.

Reed City opened the season by going 1-1 at Hart on Wednesday, losing 41-34 to the host school and beating Benzie Central, 61-18.

Going 2-0 on the night for Reed City were Devin Yokin (112), Jacob Toles (125), Matt McGahey (130) and Devin Ward (189). Dylan Chrispell (215) and Joseph Gerring (heavyweight) were 1-0.

“It was our first time out and we weren’t real happy with our team performance,” Reed City coach Roger Steig said. “We talked about it with the kids and felt it could have been better. Saturday it was a total turnaround. They stepped up Saturday. It was amazing what two days of practice did for the team.”

Steig was impressed with Fasbender on Saturday.

“He’s a first-year kid who never wrestled before,” Steig said. “He went 5-0 Saturday. I thought that was pretty outstanding.”

Steig said wrestlers on his team have been buying Christmas gifts for needy children. a representative from the Department of Human Resources would be picking up the presents on Tuesday.
