REED CITY – Reed City made an early lead count Monday night.

Chad Samuels netted 25 points while Ryan Willis added 18 for Reed City in a 73-37 Central State Activities Association victory over White Cloud.

The Coyotes had a healthy 37-19 halftime lead. They fired out to an 14-0 advantage to take early control.

Samuels had 10 points in the first quarter which ended in a 21-11 Reed City lead. Dakota Saez netted a triple midway in the second quarter for a 29-15 lead. Samuels hit two more threes later in the quarter for the 18-point halftime advantage.

“White Cloud plays a tough 2-3 zone,” said Reed City coach Dean McGuire. “Any time you shoot well on that zone from the outside, it makes your zone offense look better. We were fortunate to shoot the ball well (Monday). When you don’t shoot as well, it’s not as much fun.

“We see a lot of it in our conference. We did execute and played well. When the outside shots are falling, it makes your offense better.”

The Coyotes continued to have a healthy lead into the third quarter. Two Samuels free throws at the halfway mark made it a 43-24 game. Ryan Willis' putback gave the Coyotes a 49-28 lead with a minute left in the quarter.

Kyle Wright had a putback at the buzzer for a 51-32 advantage. Willis drove for a pair of baskets early in the fourth to help Reed City to a 58-35 lead. Jake Vincent passed to Samuels alley-oop style for a layup and 60-35 advantage.

“We played hard defense, pressed and got after them,” Willis said. “We had no turnovers (Monday). We played well on the offensive side. It was good to get scoring and everyone was chipping in.”

Reed City, 6-3 in the CSAA and 6-4 overall, is home Thursday against Big Rapids in CSAA action.

“They’re playing extremely well right now,” McGuire said. “They have everything you would want as a coach.”

“We’re getting the press down. We need everyone to get healthy,” Willis said.

Ricky Droke is out after having surgery and may return within the week. Dean Eichenberg also was out with an illness Monday.

“We can’t seem to get our full team,” McGuire said.

White Cloud, led by Hunter Redman with 12 points, falls to 3-6 and 4-7.

“They knocked down three (pointers) and they played hard,” said White Cloud coach Ed Canning. “They took better care of the ball than we did.”
