REED CITY — Reed City’s volleyball program will have a hitting camp at the school next week as the summer season rapidly draws to a close.
The summer schedule has included open gyms including one last Thursday, attended by incoming freshmen Maddie Mora and Katie Bittner
They both have been to several open gyms.
“We practice, play games sometimes, and scrimmage each other,” she said.
On average, between 16 and 20 players have come to the open gyms.
The key for Bittner has been “to know if there’s any thing different between middle school and varsity volleyball. (On the varsity) it’s more of a game,” she said.
Both have usually played in the middle.
“We’ve been doing a little bit of everything,” Bittner said.
Practices start with tryouts Aug. 13.
Coach Don Patterson said his team would not be able to have enough numbers to attend the Ferris volleyball camps earlier this week.
Next week, Wednesday and Thursday, Patterson has the hitting camps 6-7:30 p.m. each day. The main focus for everyone is on hitting. All players will be in attendance.
That will be the final formal activity prior to the start of practices. Open gyms have been among the various activities for the Coyotes.
“We’ve been quite busy this summer,” Patterson said. “It’s a little less varsity kids and maybe more at the junior varsity level than normal years.”
