Reed City volleyball team seeking late-season momentum
REED CITY — Reed City is winding down its regular-season volleyball schedule and will play Thursday at Manistee.
Central Montcalm took a 3-0 Central State Activities Association (CSAA) Gold Division victory over Reed City Tuesday night.
Central Montcalm took the first game 25-20 and fell behind in the second set 18-13 before coming back for a 25-22 win. The Hornets fired out to a 14-7 lead in the third game. Skiler Brigham’s ace helped Reed City close it to 18-15, but Central got the ball back and Mallory Morgan served six straight points to secure a 25-15 win.
“I don’t think we were that far apart,” Reed City coach Don Patterson said. “We just had some bad luck. They played pretty good defensively and we couldn’t get a ball down. We thought we played pretty good defensively but you can only play defense for so long.”
Brigham had three aces, nine kills and five digs for Reed City, followed by Alison Schermerhorn with six kills and 23 digs, Meghan Borst with two kills, Hanna Price with 22 digs, Liza Emington with 14 assists and four digs, Jordyn Storch with 10 digs and nine assists, Brenna Westhoff with three digs, Megan Donley with three kills, two blocks and two digs and Ally Yarger with three aces and 11 digs.
“I think we’ve made progress all year and will continue,” Patterson said. “The question is how far we’ll get along the way.”
Central Montcalm improved to 9-10-3 while Reed City fell to 6-18.
“We had one of our players out of the lineup with a strep throat,” Central Montcalm coach John Johnson said. “I’m proud of the kids’ effort.”
The Coyotes played at Chippewa Hills on Tuesday of this week and is at Manistee Thursday. After a quad at Reed City Oct. 28, the Coyotes play at the Class B district at Chippewa Hills.
