Reed City volleyball players staying active

REED CITY — It’s been a busy summer for the Reed City volleyball team, and it’s going to stay that way in the next few weeks.

Coach Don Patterson has been working with his girls on a very aggressive summer schedule.

“We had a couple of scrimmages and have had some stuff in the gym,” Patterson said. “We’ll have a couple of our camps coming up (this month).”

Scrimmages have been at Kingsley and Forest Area.

Next Monday will be a ball control camp, followed by a Ferris State camp and then a hitting camp the last week of July.

The camps are Monday, and potentially Tuesday, 4-5:30 p.m. each day. Sunday of each week is also a possibility, Patterson said. The Ferris camp is July 22-23.

All high school grades have been involved this summer.

“For ball control and the hitting one, we’ll have everybody,” Patterson said. “We’ll have middle school kids.”

The schedule follows basically what Patterson and his teams have done in previous summers.

The participation numbers “have been pretty much what we’ve expected,” Patterson said. “They’re pulled in so many different directions.”

Volleyball practices officially start on Aug. 12 with tournaments set for later in the month. The fact that the schedule starts less than two weeks after the first day of practices make a summer schedule so important, coaches like Patterson have said.
