Reed City volleyball heads into closing weeks

REED CITY — Reed City’s volleyball team is heading into the final weeks of the regular season and will play at the Crossroads Invitational on Saturday.

The final home action is a quad on Oct. 26. The regular season ends at the Central Montcalm Invitational on Oct. 28.

Big Rapids had too much firepower on its side of the net in a 3-0 Central State Activities Association Gold Division volleyball match on Oct. 10 at Reed City. The Cardinals, 3-2 in the league, prevailed 25-6, 25-12, 25-15.

Jayla Strickland had a kill, then a serving ace for Big Rapids, followed by Tegan Jones’ tip, to give Big Rapids an 11-4 lead in the third game. Alison Duddles followed with a tip for Reed City for an 11-5 score. But the Cardinal surge continued.

Mackaela Klever’s point made it 14-6. Jones served two aces for a 16-6 lead. Strickland had a kill for a 20-10 lead. Duddles had two for the Coyotes, who trailed 22-13. Celia Beistle’s block gave Big Rapids its 23rd point. Klever had a kill for match point.

“I was really proud of how they started and we were able to be focused throughout,” Big Rapids coach Chelsea Nelson said. “We’re trying to focus on starting strong and staying strong. Tonight, we were able to do that.”

For Big Rapids, Grace Fath had seven aces and 26 assists, Klever had 12 kills and 10 digs and Strckland had eight kills and four aces.

“We’re working on things offensively,” Nelson said. “We were able to put them into play today. Overall, the girls had fun. It was really fun to watch.

For Reed City (6-20), Duddles had seven kills and two digs while Rushford had two kills and 12 digs. Also in digs, Kamryn Myers had eight, Kiera Baker and Madalynn Brown five apiece, Storch four and Jenna Johnson three.

“We haven’t fared well against Big Rapids this year,” Reed city coach Don Patterson said. “We haven’t been able to run any offense. Our passing has not been good.

“We didn’t serve receive well enough to run any offense tonight. We have to find more focus on serve receive.”
