Reed City volleyball gets ready for the season

REED CITY — It’s been a busy July for Reed City’s volleyball team.

This week, coach Don Patterson’s team had games at Fremont Providence Christian on Monday and at the Ferris State camp starting on Tuesday. Next Monday, Reed City will be at White Cloud.

“We’ve played a few,” Patterson said. “The basketball coach, the softball coach and I sit down during the spring. We go through the summer schedule because there’s a lot of stuff we can do and we want to be cognizant of each other’s schedule so kids don’t have to choose.

“We’ve had a pretty good summer with a lot of kids showing up. Our JV team will have big numbers this year. We will have more than the 10 to 12 we typically like to keep on a team.”

The summer schedule concludes at the end of the month. Tryouts for the season start Aug. 10 for three days. The first match is Aug. 23 at Alma.

“Normally we’re at Chippewa Hills but this time we’re at Alma,” Patterson said. “There’s typically a little tougher competition at the Alma tournament.”

Among the varsity summer participants has been setter Sami Michell, who has also been working on track during the offseason months.

She went to junior World Trials and the youth nationals at Myrtle Beach, S.C. She took second in the 100 hurdles at nationals and third in the 400 hurdles. USA Track and Field sponsored those meets.

Michell, who will be a junior, won three events in the Division 3 state finals in June.

In volleyball, “I’ve been focusing on my serve, being able to put it where I want to and being more consistent,” Michell said, “and trying to make my sets as good as they can be.”
