Reed City track coach eyes 2021



REED CITY -- Brad Smith will have to wait until next year before making his debut as the new Reed City boys and girls track coach.

Smith, a former assistant was getting ready for this season, after replacing the retiring Brent Michell,

But because of the coronavirus issue, spring sports were suspended on March 13. The MHSAA announced three weeks later the season was being canceled.

"It was not a surprise," Smith said. "I figured that would be coming down, but it's a heartbreak for those seniors and the kids looking forward to the season. I guess all we can do is look forward to next year."

Reed City got in three days of practice, beginning on March 9 before the season was suspended.

The focus now is next season. Calvin Rohde in distances and Austin Fowler in throws are two talented seniors the Coyotes will miss when they start the 2021 campaign.

Smith formerly coached cross country but now focuses only on track.

Reed City, with a new home track which is only three years old, was scheduled to host the Central State Activities Association Gold meet this spring. He's hoping the schedules will turn over into next season, and the Coyotes will be able to host the meet in 2021.
