Reed City stays undefeated with 34-14 topping of Calvin Christian

GRANDVILLE — Reed City (4-0) rushed for 455 yards on Friday in picking up a 34-14 non-league victory over Grandville Calvin Christian.

Collin Hatfield rushed for 185 yards and a score for Reed City, while Andre Jones ran for 121 yards and two touchdowns. Logan Straub gained 110 yards and two scores. Taylor Pelton led the Coyotes with nine tackles.

“We were a little disappointed at our lack of execution,” Reed City coach Monty Price said. “We were a little bit lackadaisical. But we got the ‘W’ so we’re happy with that.”

Price was happy with his team’s defense.

“I thought we played pretty solid defensively,” he said. “We had a couple of penalties that led to touchdowns. Otherwise, they played solid. Our offense played pretty solid. We did not execute to the level that we’re used to.”

Calvin Christian fell to 0-4.

The Coyotes resume Central State Activities Association Gold Division action with a road game at Grant on Friday.

“It’s business as usual, going back and fixing the things we have to do better,” Price said. “We’ll break it down a little more this week into the finer details of trying to get back to the raw basics of playing good football.”

Grant (1-3) started out the season with a win over Shelby 22-9, but then lost three straight league games to Chippewa Hills (35-7), Big Rapids (20-14) and Central Montcalm (32-14).

“They’re typically pretty tough kids,” Price said. “They play fast, very energetic and enthusiastic football. Last year, they gave us a strong test on their homecoming. We’re preparing for a tough contest. They appear to have a lot of kids out. Coach (Scott) Keelean does a good job of getting them to play pretty inspired football.”
