REED CITY --  Ava Hammar can’t wait to start her sophomore season for Reed City track and field.

Practices started on Monday and Hammar was among the athletes eager to get things going.

As a freshman, Hammar was on the 4x100 and 4x200 teams, which were doing well until they were quarantined. She enjoyed her performances in the 100.

Hammar is looking for her personal record in the 100. She’s hoping the two relay teams will be effective enough to do well in the regionals and qualify for the state meet.

In the 100 dash, “I usually have a good start,” Hammar said. “I probably need to work on getting out of the blocks faster probably.”

Hammar also runs cross country but wasn’t able to run it last fall because of health reasons. Track and field has been her favorite sport.

“It’s fun to be with everybody,” she said.

It’s too early to tell, Hammar said, what her team might be able to accomplish this season. She feels she’s in good shape for the offseason to get ready for a challenging schedule, which starts in early April after spring break. Hammar and the Coyotes will practice for two weeks. Then they leave for spring break, and return to action on April 4.

The Coyotes will be at Chippewa Hills on April 6 for a multi-team event which will also feature Evart and Pine River. The Freeland Falcon Invitational will be on April 9.

Reed City hosts a CSAA Gold meet with Big Rapids, Chippewa Hills and Fremont on April 12. After the Newago Invitational on April 14 and the Mancelona Invitational on April 22, there will be CSAA Gold meets on April 26 and May 3. The Reed City Invitational is set for April 30 and the Shepherd Bluejay Invitational on May 6. The CSAA Gold meet is May 9 at Big Rapids. The regional is May 20 at Mason County Central.
