Reed City splits with Pine River

BRISTOL — Reed City and Pine River carried their intense softball rivalry into the summer months on Wednesday.

The two Local Area Teams League members played a doubleheader at Bristol Fields.

Reed City won the first game 12-0 and Pine River took the nightcap 11-8.

Sidni Rushford was the winning pitcher for Reed City, allowing no runs and one hit while striking out seven in five innings of work.

“I was pretty happy with how Sidni Rushford pitched,” Reed City coach Roger Steig said. “We’re practicing one day a week and playing one day a week.”

Taylor Cutler had two hits while Rushford and Bailey Brummel had one hit.

Alexis Bennett took the toss with five hits, 10 walks, six strikeouts, and two hit batters in 4 1/3 innings.

Kourtney Brock gave up three hits, three walks, and one strikeout.

Bennett had a triple.

In the second game, Kourtney Brock got the win with two hits, one walk, and two strikeouts in three innings.

Mackenzie Denton gave up two hits, eight walks, and three strikeouts.

Bekah Dean had a double and two singles, Hannah Hill had two singles and a RBI, Bennett had another triple with a RBI, Jordan Wanstead added a single with a RBI, Denton had a two-run single and Kourtney Brock added a single.

“Sidni Rushford had our number in Game 1, but I’m proud of putting up 11 runs, three off of Sid, in the second game, “ Pine River coach Laura Mumby said. “She shut us down in the first game well.

“We’re moving our girls around a little bit. Most of them are showing up all the time. I like the commitment we have from them being here this summer and getting some good ball.”

Maddie Morgan went an inning for Reed City, allowing seven runs on four hits and walking two. Rushford went the final five innings, allowing four runs on three hits and striking out six. Morgan and Cutler had two hits. Amy Helsel had a hit.

“I thought we struggled a little bit hitting,” Steig said. “That’s normal for summer.”

Games resume on July 6. Reed City plays Marion at Bristol and Pine River is at Tri County.
