Reed City sophomore hopeful for more wins for basketball team

REED CITY —  Alanna Nelson is one of three sophomores on a Reed City girls basketball team striving to make improvements during the season’s early stages.

The Coyotes lost 46-39 to Tri County and 39-35 to Newayo in Central State Activities Association Gold Division action during December.

“We picked it up in the second half,” Nelson said after the Tri County game. “We had a lot more enthusiasm and came to compete.”

Reed City entered this week at 2-4 overall and 0-2 in the CSAA.

“I think we’re doing really well, and I think we’ll have a good season this year,” Nelson said.

She saw some varsity action about three-fourths of last season, but feels more confident on the varsity level this year.

“Last year was nerve racking, but I feel more comfortable,” she said.

Nelson has been a shooting guard.

“I’m doing pretty well,” she said.

Nelson’s favorite shot is the 3-pointer.

“It’s going pretty good,” she said. “You have to practice on and off the court, and when you’re not in practice go in the gym and practice harder.”

Nelson has focused on her dribbling.

The Coyotes are off until a home game Jan. 5 with Fremont.

“We have to practice harder at practice and play as a team,” Nelson said.
