FREMONT — Reed City’s softball team picked up strong pitching performances on Friday from Sidni Rushford and Maddie Morgan for 4-0 and 2-1 victories over Fremont to open the Central State Activities Association Gold Division season.

The Coyotes are 6-2 overall.

Rushford scattered three hits while allowing no runs and striking out six. Alyssa Olds, Jordyn Storch, Rushford. Lily Andres and Kiera Barker had hits.

Morgan in the second game allowed one run on three hits and one walk and struck out one. Rushford had two hits while Kamryn Myers, Storch, Barker and Andres had one hit apiece.

“These were two well-played games,” Reed City coach Roger Steig said, adding he was happy with the team’s pitching and defense. “We started out the season 5-0, then we played Kalkaska (and lost 13-6 and 20-2). That was a gut check for us. We broke down everybody’s offense and defense and talked about what we had to do to make ourselves a better team.”

Reed City is at Traverse City St. Francis on Saturday.
