Reed City softball team sweeps Evart to open season

Amanda Stieg was the winning pitcher in the first game, walking none and striking out five and giving up three hits.

“For this time of year and being our first game the girls played outstanding,” said Reed City coach Roger Steig. “There was some things we have to work on like our base running. A nice problem is that we were a little too aggressive.”

Emma Lockhart, Sam McDonald and Taylor Stieg were all 2-for-3. Ally Stieg, Cerria Engstrom and Riley Lawson had one hit each. Courtney Morgan belted a home run.

Morgan was the winning pitcher in the second game, striking out four, walking one and allowing three hits and one run. Lockhart was 4-for-4 while Amanda Stieg, Ally Stieg and Sydni Arnold had two hits apiece. Sam McDonald, Courtney Morgan, Lawson, Engstrom and Taylor Stieg had one hit apiece.

“We’re working on small ball, bunting and moving runners,” said Ally Stieg, Reed City’s shortstop. “We did that extremely well tonight.”

For Evart, Bengry took the loss in the first game and Sam Bressler was the losing pitcher in the second At the plate, Bengry had a double and Dani Gray and Lacey Wade delivered singles in the first game. Bressler, Hyde and Wade had hit in the second game and Case added an RBI.

“We are making strides,” said Evart coach Josh Johnson. “The young players are getting better and every practice every day. The swings are getting better. When we played Harrison (last week) we struck out eight out of nine times in a three-inning game. We struck out (six) times tonight in the doubleheader.

“We’re putting the ball in play more.”
