Coach Roger Steig, meanwhile, is keeping busy as owner of Cherry Raceway nearly Traverse City. It’s his fourth season as owner.
“It’s going great up there,” Steig said. “We’re averaging about 1,200 spectators every Friday night.”There are six divisions of late cars including street stocks, late model, modifieds, 4-cylinders and bombers.
Steig, a long-time race driver, got into it this season after taking a few years off after buying Speedway Steig races at Merritt Speedway.
“Right now, we’re running second in points,” Steig said, referring to the UMP modified classes. Merritt has races Saturday night.
Steig was 1974 Rookie of the Year at Merritt.
Cars are lighter, Steig noted.
“It’s like riding a bike, “ he said. “We were sure I‘d race. We didn’t get there in time to qualify so they said I had to start in the rear and we won our first race by a half a lap.”
