REED CITY — Reed City’s softball team closes its summer schedule next week, but the Coyotes have already clinched the Local Area Teams League championship.

Reed City improved its LAT League record to 9-1 with a pair of 5-4 wins over Pine River at Bristol Fields.

With only two league games remaining, the Coyotes have sealed the title. They were the home team in both games against Pine River, and took a pair of walkoff wins in the seventh inning.

Jules Griffin was the winning pitcher in the first game. She gave up four runs on six hits.

Leading hitters were Bailey Brummel, Olivia Larson, Kameron Myers, Maddie Morgan and Devin Willard. Myers had the walkoff base hit in the opener.

Sidni Rushford was the winning pitcher in the second game. She walked two and struck out three, and gave up two hits and four runs.

Brummel and Alyiah Hobbs had Reed City’s only hits.

Ally Yarger was on third base in the bottom of the seventh and scored on a wild pitch.

Reed City coach Roger Steig acknowledged it was good for his team to have two close games to face sticky situations they might encounter next spring.

“Pine River has really improved this summer, along with our girls,” he said. “We’re the top two teams in the league and these games turned out that way with both going into extra innings. They were low-scoring games. That’s good ball for summer ball.”

The LAT League schedule ends Wednesday at Tri County with a doubleheader. Reed City also plays at Montabella on July 30 to end the summer schedule.
