Reed City set for home opener against Tri County

REED CITY — Reed City will have virtually a brand new starting lineup fans will see Friday night when the Coyotes have their home opener against Central State Activities Association  (CSAA) boys basketball foe Tri County.

The season opened Tuesday night at Cadillac. Other games prior to the holiday break are Dec. 17 at Evart and Dec. 19 at Newaygo.

The focus for Reed City has been getting back to full strength with different players nursing injuries of various degrees.

“We’re doing fair,” Reed City coach Dean McGuire said. “I wouldn’t say great, I wouldn’t say bad.”

McGuire said 11 players will be in uniform this week.

“Of the 11, we have 13 on the team but two will not be in uniform,” he said. “Three of the 11 that will be in uniform, are not at 100 percent. But when the schedule says you have to play, you don’t have much of a choice.”

Chris Barton and Patrick Jobes are probably the two returning players who saw the most action from last year’s team that graduated talented players like Chad Samuels and Kyle Wright.

“All the people that got significant playing time last year were seniors,” McGuire said. “We’re basically young.”

Nolan Patterson is a senior back from last season who didn’t play because of injury.

“I think everyone (in the lineup) will see some time,” McGuire said. “We have a strong junior class right now. It may be one guy one night, it might be a different guy the next.”

Cadillac has a new coach but McGuire was expecting a tough opener.

“They’re going to be solid for sure,” he said.

Friday’s game with Tri County features a return to  girls-boys varsity doubleheaders. The girls tip off at 5:30 p.m., followed by the boys game. All Friday games will be scheduled that way this season.
