REED CITY – Xavier Allen has had a solid baseball season for Reed City and hoped it would continue on Saturday when the Coyotes played at Hart in the Division 3 district tournament.
It’s his sophomore season, and Allen said he was set to play as a freshman with the varsity in 2020 had there not been the COVID pandemic.
Allen played football and basketball where there had been delays to the season. The baseball season didn’t face as extensive of a delay, although he and some of his teammates have had to go through some quarantine hassles.
Allen has played various infield positions. He indicated shortstop might be his best spot.
He’s had confidence in both his fielding and throwing abilities.
“My hitting has been going good,” he said, indicating he’s been a .300 hitter. “I’m picky (on pitches).”
Against Newaygo, Allen had a two-hitter. His fastball has been a strength.
“You just get up there and throw,” he said. “I have my pitches figured out. The second best is probably curveball. Third best is changeup.”
As the season reached its later stages, Allen was optimistic.
“We’re definitely getting there,” he said. “We’re meshing together. It’s going good. We have to get the bats going early and make sure we’re focused.”
Allen plays football, basketball and baseball and said baseball is his favorite.
“It’s what I’ve grown up with,” he said. “I’ve played since tee-ball.”
The Coyotes lost in the district final to Evart.
