Reed City qualifies several athletes for state final

REED CITY — Reed City’s track team was fifth for boys and seventh for girls in the Division 3 regional at Mason County Central on Friday.

Traverse City St. Francis was first for both boys and girls.

The top two finishers, plus those that met a certain qualifying standard, will compete at the state finals on June 4.

For Reed City boys, the 4x100 relay team of Andre Jones, Phillip Jones, Nate Fasbender and Schuyler Smith was first (44.54). Also first was the 4x200 relay team of Phillip Jones, Mykel Dillard, Andre Jones and Smith (1:33.27). Fasbender won the pole vault (15-0). Brad Marek was second in the 110-meter hurdles (16.2) and second in the 300-meter hurdles (42.92). Dillard was second in the long jump (20-10 .75).

For Reed City girls, Meghan Borst, Carmen Guy, Emily Libey and Hanna Price won the 4x100 relay (52.75). Price won the 100 meter hurdles (15.65).

“I thought we did an amazingly good job,” Reed City coach Brent Michell said. “Everybody we thought had a chance to qualify did. We were seeded second or third in a couple of races, and we took first. We were ready to go. It was fun to watch them run.

“Phillip Jones was very good in his first trip to the regionals. Mykel Dillard on his very first jump qualified. Then he bettered it to slide into second place, only an inch out of first. Brad Marek ran two very good races in the hurdles. Hanna Price in the 100 hurdles really turned on. Friday, she finished it well.”

Price finished fourth in the 100 dash, but had a qualifying time for the state final. She missed qualifying in the 300 hurdles by a hundredth of a second, Michell said. Schuyler Smith cleared 6-0 in the high jump to qualify.

The state final is June 4 at Comstock Park.
