Reed City junior hopes to help team to victory at Big Rapids

REED CITY — Reed City’s girls basketball team has a chance to break into the win column at Big Rapids on Wednesday, but will have to do it against the host Cardinals in a Class B district semifinal game.

Junior Brenna Westhoff had one of her best games so far this season last week in a 14-point effort against Central Montcalm and is hoping for even more success this week.

“My shots were falling, so I thought, ‘why not shoot more?” Westhoff said after the Central Montcalm game. “We have been improving a lot. Our defense has gotten a lot better and so has our offense. We’re starting to shoot more. It’s been tough.”

The Coyotes took some teams down to the wire in search of that elusive first win, including Central Montcalm, but haven’t been able to get the finishing touches.

“We’ve been really close in our last games, but we have to learn how to finish,” Westhoff said. “We’re a very young team and I don’t think we know how to do that yet.”

She’s been in double figures in recent games and Westhoff would like to keep it going.

“My coach has been pushing me to shoot more,” she said. ‘I’ve been trying to listen to him.”

Prior to the Chippewa HIlls game Friday that ended the regular season, Westhoff said “defense and looking to shoot” would be the keys to Reed City’s remaining games of the season.
