REED CITY — Ben Schermerhorn and Spencer Battle will be competing for Reed City in regional boys golf action at Ludington on Thursday with hopes of scoring well enough to advance to the state finals June 14-15.

Schermerhorn shot a 90 at districts to qualify for state.

“The first nine, I started out all right,” he said. “The second hole, it got a little rough. I put a couple in the pond. After that, it was hard to bounce back. I ended up shooting a 49 front nine. The second nine, I started out shooting a birdie. I ended up with a 41.”

He plays at Lakeside Links Thursday.

“It looks easy on paper,” Schermerhorn said. “All the greens are really fast.  He’s hoping to shoot in the mid 80s on Thursday. Battle, a junior, is in his second varsity season. He also qualified for regionals last season.

“This season I think maybe I’m a little bit better,” he said.

He’s been averaging in low 90s for 18 holes. He shot a 92 a districts.

“I’m hoping for a little lower but that’s all right,” Battle said, adding that at districts,“I didn’t think I was going to make it that day. I ended up making it.”

On Thursday, Battle hopes to shoot low to mid 90s.

“I’m going to have to shoot something really low to go to state,” he said.

The short game has been a  strength for Battle. He’s been working on his driving.

The team was unable to qualify for state.

“I think it was a pretty good season,” he said. “We had a couple of new players come out.”
