Reed City golfers eighth at districts

MONTAGUE — Reed City placed eighth in the boys golf districts at Old Channel Trail on Wednesday out of 11 teams. The Coyotes needed to be sixth or higher to advance to this Thursday’s regionals at Ludington.

”We would have liked to have made it as a team,” said Reed City coach Katrina Wray. “The scores weren’t there that we’re capable of, Everybody had some extra strokes.”

Two Coyote golfers qualified as individuals for the regionals next Thursday at Ludington. Ben Schermerhorn had a 90 while Spencer Battle followed with a 92. Chad Samuels had a 99, Kaden Phelps a 103 and Jacob Green a 106 for Reed City.

“Spencer Battle had a 92, that’s a good score for him,” Wray said. “That’s one of his better scores.”

Reed City had a team score of 391.

“It was an open course, but there were a lot of out of bounds,” said Wray. “Here at Spring Valley (Reed City’s home course), there’s not a lot of out of bounds.

“It was cold. We were close to Lake Michigan. Personally, I was freezing. Schools like Chippewa Hills played very well. We’ve been close to them most of the year. They played better than we did.”

Wray said her two golfers will virtually have to have their personal bests, like in the 70s, to make the cut and advance to next week’s state finals.

“Spencer has another year yet, he’s a junior,“ Wray said.
