Reed City girls split against Newaygo

REED CITY — Reed City’s softball team beat Newaygo 11-10 on Friday in a Central State Activities Association Gold Division game.

Jules Griffin was the winning pitcher, striking out six and walking three.

Sidni Rushford had four hits while Kamryn Myers, Joceyln Wirth, Bailey Brummel, Griffin, Ally Yarger, Alyssa Olds and Devin Willard had one apiece.

Reed City lost the second game 8-2.

Rushford took the loss. Olivia Lawson, Rushford, Myers and Olds had one hit apiece for Reed City (1-3, 6-6).

The Coyotes had a sweep over White Cloud  7-2 and 3-2 on Wednesday. Rushford, Myers and Lawson had hits. Lawson drove in the game winner in the seventh inning in Game 2.

Griffin won the first game as pitcher with six strikeouts. Rushford had six strikeouts as the winner in the second game.

Reed City’s softball team was hoping for a sweep on April 19 against nonleague foe Manton but had to settle for a split.

The Coyotes won the first game 8-3 but the Rangers prevailed 10-4 in the nightcap.

“We’re playing a tough first game all year,” Reed city coach Roger Steig said. “We’re struggling in the second game. We have some work to get ourselves together in the second game.”

Griffin was the winning pitcher in the opener, striking out eight and walking none. She and Wirth had doubles. Bailey Brummel, Taylor Cutler, Olivia Lawson, Myers and Rushford had singles.

Rushford took the loss in the second game, striking out 10 and walking three. Lawson,with a triple, and Rushford both had two hits. Griffin and Olds had one hit apiece.

“The first game went really well,” Myers said. “We were hitting the ball. But the second game, we just lost our intensity.”

“They’re getting to our pitcher right now in the second game,” Steig said. “We’ll work with that.”

Reed City hosts Pine River on Thursday.

“We’re working on a lot of things,” Steig said. “They’re a young group together. It’s a matter of clicking on all cylinders out there. Then we’ll be a good ballclub.”
