Reed City does well in golf scramble

BIG RAPIDS — The Coyote Invitational used the scramble format on Friday and it was to Reed City’s liking.

Sparta won with 226, followed by Reed City (236) and Fremont (237). Among the other schools participating were Chippewa Hills (260) in sixth.

Each school had three two-man golf teams who played in a scramble format and three scores were kept. The event was at Falcon Head Golf Course, hosted by Reed City.

“Today was a great day,” Reed City coach Katrina Wray said. “The boys were excited to play here. This is one of their favorite events. They put together some good scores. We came up short for the win, but it gives us something to work for next year. We thank Falcon Head for hosting this event.”

Thomas Quinn and Josh Mund had a 75 for Reed City followed by Bryce Grannis and Mason Bush with 80 and Seth Phelps and Alex Wirgau with 81.

“I shot pretty good,” Mund said. “Usually I shoot in the high 90s “This season is going good; I started off good but have done poorer lately.”

Junior Kaden Doyle had 75 with his partner to lead Chippewas Hills’ effort. Par for the course is a 72.

“It was not too bad,” Doyle said. “Conditions were fast. The greens were rolling good. The season could be going better.”

Short game has been Doyle’s best asset. He’s been looking to improve on his mid-irons.

Junior Mitchell Kuzma was Doyle’s partner.

“It went good,” he said. “I had some good shots and Kaden had a good short game. I’ve played before but this is my first year of competitive golf.”
