Reed City cross country team ready to test its talents

REED CITY — Reed City’s cross country team is looking for more numbers to get the season off to a flying start Saturday when the Coyotes run at the Pete Moss Invitational at Benzie Central followed by the Chippewa Hills Invitational next Tuesday.

Coach Brad Smith said some runners are still “trickling in.” As of earlier this week, he was working with six girls and three boys.

Senior Kris Kellogg, junior Matt McGahey and senior Drake Walker are all back for the boys team. Sophomore McKenzie Cornelius is the lone returning runner for the RC girls.“There will be some pretty good runners there,” Smith said. “Everyone likes to run on that course at least once because usually the regionals are there.”

Evart’s cross country team also makes its debut Saturday at Benzie Central. The Wildcat boys were state runners-up in Division 4 last season. Max Hodges is back along with Santana Scott, Zach Douglas, Thomas Galley, Josh Woods and others.

The Wildcats are trying to make up for the graduation of all-state runners Logan Hammer and David Zinger.

New coach Kevin Mills will have Grace Hamilton leading the girls attack. Rachel Galley is among the other Wildcat runners. One of Evart’s home races is Sept. 20 with Reed City. Home races will be at Spring Hill.
