Reed City coach elated with effort despite team's title game loss

Undefeated Ithaca holds back Coyotes for championship

REED CITY – Reed City wasn’t able to put together four strong quarters the Coyotes would need in the girls basketball title game Saturday of the RC Holiday Tournament.

Delaney Seaman scored three triples and 14 points in the first quarter to lead undefeated Ithaca (7-0) to a 43-31 win over the host Coyotes (1-7).

“ I thought we had the effort today we’ve been missing the last couple of games so I’m really happy with that,” Reed City coach Tim Beilfuss said. “Ithaca’s a good team. Delaney is a tough guard. She can shoot from deep.”

Ithaca stormed out to a 16-8 lead after the first quarter but struggled with only three points in the second. Morgan Hammond’s triple for Reed City cut the Ithaca lead to 17-11. Kyleigh Weck scored off a drive to keep Reed City close and Ithaca led 19-15 at halftime.

Weck scored late in the third and Ithaca’s lead was 23-21. But Reed City turnovers were costly for the Couotes and allowed Ithaca to build 29-21 lead after the third.

Libby Maurer’s three straight triples early in the third gave the Yellowjackets a 38-23 lead. Seaman added a 3-point play for Ithaca.

“In the third quarter, we’re making a run, we get back and are breaking the press so we have to finish it off,” Beilfuss said. “But it was a much better effort today. We’re trying to get the rotation down with Natalie (Albright) out. Ithaca is a good team.”

Seaman wound up with 19 points. Maurer had 13 points.

“We’re playing pretty well but there’s a lot of stuff we can get do to get better,” Ithaca coach Khris Nevins said. “We haven’t hit our groove yet. We’ve been grinding out the wins. When the girls hit their niche and start getting everything together and right the entire game, we’ll be fine.”

Weck had 12 points for Reed City while Hayden Cutler had six points.

“We played well and had a good effort,” RC freshman Morgan Hammond said. “We were there.”

On the injury front, the Coyotes are still waiting to hear when Christina Malackanich can return to lineup and Albright is still out with facial injuries,
