Reed City boys track third at regionals

REED CITY — Reed City came very close to qualifying for this weekend’s MITCA team state finals but instead settled for third at the Division 3 regionals Friday at Mason County Central

Morley Stanwood had 99 points and Clare 84.5 to qualify for the MITCA meet. Reed City was close behind with 76 and will still send several athletes to the MHSAA state finals June 2 at Comstock Park.

Joe Oehrli won two events with the 800-meter run in 1:56.58 and the 1,600-meter run in 4:22.93. Oehrli was the anchor of the 1,600-meter relay squad that was first in 3:28.66. Eric Reed started the race, followed by Eric and Michael Bradford and Oehrli. Nate Kailing was second in the shot put with a throw of 47-9 ½.

The top two finishers in each event qualified for the state finals along with those that met a certain qualifying mark. The 800-relay foursome of Eric Bradford, Michael Bradford, Eric Voelker and Eric Reed clocked the race in 1:32.57 for fourth place to qualify for state as did the 400-relay of Eric and Michael Bradford, Eric Reed and Jon Green in 45.18 seconds for third place.

Eric Reed qualified based on his time in the 200 in 23.32 seconds for third place.

Chad Zagacki just missed out on qualifying for the 3,200-meter run by taking third in 10:12.30.

“I was excited for the kids,” said Coyote boys coach Brent Mitchell. “They ran well. We were eight points from Clare. We were right in the meet. We came up short (as a team) but were right in there. Oehrli and Eric Reed led the way.

“We were excellent as a team. We were hoping to qualify for (team) state.”

Reed City scored 42 points in the girls meet with Sami Michell taking four places to qualify in each one. Michell in the regionals at MCC won the long jump at 17-8. She also took first in the 100-meter hurdles at 14.24 seconds, the 300-meter hurdles in 43.61 seconds and the 200-meter dash in 25.82.

Bethany Church was seventh in the shot put at 27-9 ½.
