Reed City boys second in CSAA meet

REED CITY — The Reed City boys track team was second on Monday in the Central State Activities Association Gold Division meet at Central Montcalm.

Tri County scored 116 points compared to 95 for Reed City and 93 for Chippewa Hills.

“They ran really well, I was very pleased with them,” Reed City coach Brent Michell said. “It was way better than what we ran in the dual meets.”

Schuyler Smith jumped 6 foot, 2 inches in the high jump and won. The Coyotes also had two relay wins with the 4x100 (44.61), featuring Phillip Jones, Taylor Pelton, Nathan Fasbender and Andre Jones and the 4x200 with Phillip Jones (1:32.92), Smith, Mykel Dillard and Andre Jones.

Fasbender took second in the pole vault (12-0) and second in the 100 meters (11.89).

“We started (the pole vault) at 12 feet to practice for regionals and he skipped 14 feet and we had trouble getting him in deep enough and he came down on it three times,” Michell said. “So he ended up second.”

Dillard and Pelton took third (24.48) and fourth (24.51) in the 200. Pelton was fourth in the 100 (12.07). Dillard was second (20-1 3/4) in the long jump and Phillip Jones was fifth (18-7 1/4).

Brad Marek was second in the 110 hurdles (44.67). He had a 17.50 in the 110 for third. He combined with Andre Jones, Dillard and Smith to take second in the 4x400 relay (3:37.80).

The Reed City girls were sixth. Hannah Price was second in the 100 hurdles (16.52), second in the 300 hurdles (49.80), and third in the 100 meters (13.80), Emily Libey, Meghan Borst, Carmen Guy and Price were second in the 4x100 relay (55.21), Libey, Borst, Guy and Jennelle Straathof were third in the 4x200 relay (1:58.14). Hannah Boza was second in the discus (93-7) and was sixth in the shot put (29-9).

Meanwhile, local track and field teams braved the rain and cold weather to compete in Central State Activities Association Gold Division action on Tuesday.

It was Big Rapids’ last home meet of the season and the Cardinals defeated Reed City boys 62-59 and the girls 69-42. Chippewa Hills defeated Reed City in the boys 95-32 and in the girls meet 112-15.

Reed City boys netted first places against Big Rapids from Marek in the 110 (16.6) and 300 hurdles (44.0),Andre Jones, Smith, Dillard and Phillip Jones in the 4x200 (1:36.6), Tyler White, Tyler Kerr, Angel Estrada and Damion Stinson in the 4x100 relay (2:01.0), Dillard in the long jump (17-8.5), Smith in the high jump (5-10), Michael Johnson in the shot put (32-9) and Angel Estrada in the discus (98-2).

Reed City girls who took firsts against Big Rapids were Price in the 200 meters (27.6), 100 (18.1) and 300 hurdles (49.9), straathof, Guy, Libey and Borst in the 4x200 relay (2:01), Price, Guy, Libey and Borst in the 4x100 relay (54.7), Straathof in the 400 meters (1:12.2), Alaynah Pelton in the high jump (4-0) and Boza in the discus (92-10).

“We didn’t look too good,” Michell said. “It was the weather, certainly. But weather like this, you can’t worry about times. You have to worry about competing. I’m hoping we can learn to compete better. We’re young.”
