Reed City boys ready for district

REED CITY — Reed City’s boys basketball team dropped two close Central State Activities Association Gold Division games to Big Rapids during the regular season.

But there’s a chance the Coyotes could get a third chance at the Cardinals, which would come in Friday’s Class B district final at Big Rapids.

Wednesday night in the semifinals at Big Rapids, Reed City faces Harrison at 6 p.m., followed by the Clare-Big Rapids game. The two winners play in the title game on Friday.

The Coyotes haven’t played since Feb. 26 when they defeated Chippewa Hills at home to end the league season. No games were scheduled for last week.

Coach Dean McGuire acknowledged it was not an ideal situation to not have a game last week. Last season, the Coyotes played a snow date against Manistee in that final week.

“Absolutely there’s a concern with a long layoff,” McGuire said. “We’ll have to see how the team comes off and responds to it.”

Clare and Harrison are from the Jack Pine Conference.

“Clare is a solid team,” McGuire said. “Big Rapids is the team to beat in our district. We have Harrison, which won five games this year. Theyre down a little bit. We were in the middle of the (league) pack this year. If we work hard against Harrison and do what we’re supposed to do, we’ll have to get after them.

“If we take care of business, it could be another Friday night Reed City-Big Rapids game,” McGuire said. Big Rapids is the team to beat, for sure.”
