Reed City boys eye late season push
REED CITY -- One game is left on the regular-season schedule for the Reed City boys basketball team, which plays a non-league contest at Harrison on Tuesday night.
Last week, in Central State Activities Association Gold Division action, Reed City lost on Feb. 25 to Central Montcalm 62-49 and on Friday to Newaygo 63-47.
Reed City tied for fifth in the CSAA Gold at 5-9 and is 5-14 overall.
Against Central Montcalm, "I thought the kids played a really good first half," Reed city coach Jesse Kailing said. "It kind of slipped away from us in the second half. We had some defensive lapses and the ball didn't go in the basket like it did the first half."
Friday against Newaygo, "they came out and played well and we didn't," Kailing said. "That's what it comes down to. I thought we would be hungry for that game and ready to play hard. Obviously we weren't. It's a little bit of a letdown. We have a game at Harrison and the following week are at districts. We have to figure something out quick."
Xavier Allen, a freshman, led Reed City against Newaygo with nine points.
Reed City is in the Division 2 district at Cadillac and plays on March 11 in a semifinal game. The opponent will be the Ludington-Benzie Central winner from Monday. With a win in the first game, the Coyotes would advance to the title game.
Kailing said he doesn't know much about Ludington or Benzie.
"We'll be scouting them tightly here in the next day or two," Kailing said.
