Monday night had a touch of winter inside the Reed City gymnasium.

The boys of winter, alias the Reed City boys basketball team, was having a practice to prepare for the remaining portion of its summer schedule.

This past weekend, coach Jesse Kailing’s team was at the Ferris State basketball camps. Next week, the squad will have scrimmages at Cadillac.

Jared Holmquist and Dakota Saez are two returning Reed City players who have been busy since the end of the winter.

“I played a lot of AAU in the months of April and May,” he said. “I actually played almost 40 games. With high school in June , we have three team camps we’re doing. I’ll have three more tournaments in July with AAU.”

At the Reed City camps, Holmquist noted the bonding process with the 2011-12 team is starting.

“We have 19 guys this summer and there’s eight of us from the team last year,” he said. “There’s a lot of new guys. We’ve had a few plays we worked on, but not like during the season.”

At Ferris, Reed City was 6-3 for third place. Zeeland East, Godwin Heights, St. Joseph and Comstock Park were among the opponents.

“It was pretty tough,” Saez said. “We finished pretty good.”

Saez has also been playing AAU basketball.

Summer ball “is very important,” he said. “It helps the team get better and helps me individually get better. I’m working on everything.”
