REED CITY — It was a good start to the summer for the Reed City Rage, which is also the Coyotes summer softball team. The Rage swept Manton 16-12 and 15-10 last Wednesday to open the summer session at Bristol Fields for the Local Area Teams (LAT) League.

The summer season finally started after the previous two Wednesdays were rained out.

“This is really beneficial to our upcoming season,” Reed City coach Roger Steig said. “Some girls have graduated and new girls are coming in and it gives us a chance to all work together. Younger girls work with the older girls. It’s a neat league we have this year going for it.”

Julianne Griffin and Sidni Rushford combined for the pitching victory in the first game. Ally Yarger led a strong Reed City attack with two hits.

Olivia Lawson picked up the pitching win in the second game. The Coyote offense was the beneficiary of several walks. Lindsey Greer had two singles while Skiler Brigham contributed a single and homer. Griffin and Ricki Saez also had hits.

Greer threw out a runner from her catcher’s position.

Steig and other coaches enjoy the chance to have the type of seasonable weather they likely won’t have in March and April as they start the 2015 season.

“We do free substitution and you as a coach can move them around and get looks at them a lot more,” Steig said. “There’s a lot more opportunities to try things that you don’t get during the regular season. You can move them any time you want. It’s easier to get better looks at your kids.”

Reed City will have LAT League games Tuesday and Wednesday of this week and next. All will be doubleheaders starting at 5 p.m.

Steig also liked being able to give his three high school pitchers a look.

“We’re able to rotate the pitchers in a lot,” he said. “The girls have a lot of fun.”
