Reed City, Pine River softball teams beat Lake City in LAT action
BRISTOL — The summer softball season in the LAT League ended for Reed City and Pine River on Monday night with both teams defeating Lake City at the Bristol ball diamonds.
Evart was scheduled to play but did not bring a team, making it a three-team event. Pine River and Reed City did not play each other.
Reed City scored a 14-3 win in six innings. Courtney Morgan pitched four innings and struck out six. Sam McDonald had two strikeouts in one inning of work.
Sydni Arnold, Skyler Brigham, Julieann Griffith, Courtney Morgan and Taylor Steig also had hits for Reed City.
Reed City scored one run in the first, four in the second, two in the fourth and seven in the sixth.
“Defensively, our girls meshed pretty well tonight,” said Reed City coach Roger Steig. “I thought we were pretty focused at the plate. We were making them throw us good stuff to hit.”
The Reed City team closes its summer season Wednesday with games at Mount Pleasant.
Pine River blanked Lake City 10-0. Paige Esiline went the first two innings on the mound and walked one. Brooke Sebastiano had a hit while Ashley Huss added a triple.
“Things went great,” said Pine River coach Laura Mumby. “I’ve been improessed with the number of kids we have turning out every week. The kids are eager to learn. Softball is a big tradition around here.”
“It’s been really helpful,” said Esiline, who will be a sophomore next season and has usually pitched three innings during LAT League sessions and added that the key has been “just pitching to different people.”
Pine River has an older team, mostly of varsity players, that also plays weekly at Mount Pleasant and will finish the season on Wednesday.
