Reed City-Pine River alumni team having success in summer LAT league

LEROY — It's a first-year summer team with some familiar faces.

The Local Area Teams League, which plays during the summer at Bristol Fields, has been working with six teams this year including an alumni team of former Pine River and Reed City softball players.

Former Reed City player Taylor Steig and-Pine River performer Christie Nelson have been co-coaches and players of the team. Taylor Steig's dad, Roger Steig coaches Reed City.

The six-week league season goes until the end of this month. Reed City and Pine River have separate teams in the league, which also includes squads from Tri County, Cadillac and Marion.

The alumni team "was Laura Mumby's idea," Taylor Steig said, referring to Pine River's coach.

Players include  Brittany Cassidy, Julie Gerbhard, Kaylynn Hastings, Jules Griffin, Jenna Johnson, Sam Kubit, Courtney Morgan, Kassy, Lindsey and Miranda Nelson, Tiphany Williams and Brittany and Ally Yarger.

Griffin, Morgan and Nelson have been pitchers. The team usually isn't able to have find enough time to have practices. "We're just lucky to get the people to have time to be at the games," Steig said.

But after four doubleheaders, the alumni team has been able to field a full lineup and is 8-0.

"We're playing very well for being old," Steig laughed. "It's been fun."

"There's rusty spots," Christy Nelson smiled.
