RC junior division team ends season with 5-8 mark

REED CITY — A productive summer of baseball ended for the Reed City junior division team in the Reed City Little League on Friday with a victory over Sand Lake at the high school field.

The team was coached by former Reed City baseball player Brian Mund.

The division consists of 13-14-year-old players.

In Friday’s season finale, the Reed City team beat Sand Lake 20-3 in four innings.

The team consisted mainly of Reed City players although there were also three from Baldwin: Brenton Childress, Daron Copeland and Tyler Clugston.

Clugston was the winning pitcher. Derrick Razor and Cameron Cornell also pitched. Clugston had a 3-run inside-the-park home run. Gabe Miller added an RBI triple while Matt Mund had a triple and single.

“It was probably our best all-around game all year,” Mund said. “We pitched really well and hit really well. It was good. We learned all season long.”

The final record for Reed City was 5-8. The team played opponents from Big Rapids, Evart, Hesperia, Fremont, Newaygo and Sand Lake.

Clugston was among the team’s leaders in hitting. Copeland, Miller and Mund were among the team’s top pitchers.

Brian Mund said about half of the players will be advancing to the high school level next spring. It was his second year of coaching the team.

“We got a lot better,” he said. “We didn’t win a game last year. For a lot of kids, it’s their first year they can lead off and steal bases. That’s a big step. The pitching mound is moved back.”
