Powell set to have strong junior season
LEROY — Logan Powell enters her junior sports season at Pine River determined to enjoy as much success as possible in her sports, especially basketball and track.
Powell came off a strong sports season in which she went to the state finals in track.
It was a steady season for Powell. She had a personal record of 13.48 seconds in the 100-meter dash and placed second in the Highland Conference meet. She was third in the conference in the 200 meters in 28.40 seconds.
Her most successful event turned out to be the 400-meter run. She placed third at regionals but had a qualifying time of 1:01.82 and was second in the Highland Conference meet in 1:02.27. She saved her best for last in the state finals. She did not get in the top eight for an all-state medal. But her 12th-place time of 1:01.06 was still a personal record.
“I shaved about four seconds off my PR from last year and that made me really happy,” Powell said prior to the state finals. “It’s a hard race to run, it’s scary, just from how long it is and you’re supposed to do an all-out sprint.”
It was her first appearance at state. She was looking for her personal record and got it.
When it comes to the 400 meters, Powell was able to handle the curves very well.
“But you have to be able to get out and finish that race,” Powell said.
She indicated her second best event would be the 100-meter or 200-meter dashes.
“They’re my favorite races,” she said. “They’re fun to run.”
Powell also enjoyed some success in the 800-meter relay.
