Powell concludes solid freshman basketball season

LEROY — Logan Powell completed an impressive freshman season for Pine River’s girls basketball team, which took home a Highland Conference championship.

Late in the regular season, following a win over Marion, Powell could tell that her team was on the right path.

“We wanted to come out fast and be strong,” she said. “We didn’t want to sink down a level. We wanted to make them play our game.”

Powell joined the team as a freshman and the Bucks started out 0-2. They were 17-4 after ending the season earlier this month in a 54-50 loss to McBain in the district finals.

“I think we’ve made a lot of progress,” she said. “We’re still a young team. But for as young as we are, I think we’re pretty good.  At the beginning of the season, I was really nervous, but I’m beginning to feel more comfortable.”

Powell, as the season progressed, felt more comfortable taking shots. It was apparent early in the season the Bucks had to compensate offensively for the loss of all-stater Kassy Nelson, who is now in the college ranks. Powell and others, such as Julie Justin and Kierra Justin, eventually came through in an impressive way.

“We’re not very good at driving to a hole when we have an open lane,” Powell said late in the season. “But when we do, we’re not very good at finishing. So we have to make sure we put all our free throws in when we get our opportunities.”
