Pine River youth basketball camp draws more than 50 players

LEROY — Last week Monday and Tuesday were busy days for Pine River boys basketball coach Brian Goodenow.

He had his two-day youth camp with 50 youngsters who registered. Another six came during the first day. It was boys fourth through eighth grade.

“It’s great with a little over 50,” Goodenow said. “We did our youth camp for free this year as a thank you to the community for all the support over the years. That obviously helps with the turnout too. It’s good to have a lot of kids in the gym.”

Monday’s focus was on shooting and Tuesday’s emphasis was on passing and dribbling drills with a scrimmage at the end.

Goodenow had a full summer of varsity basketball and said only open gyms are remaining.

Goodenow noted most of his players also are in other sports such as football. On Tuesday, he had some of his alumni basketball players coming to the gym to work with players. Pine River players that would be working with the basketball youth camp had a Tuesday commitment for football in the passing league at Cadillac.
