Pine River wrestlers win fourth straight league title
LEROY – Pine River enjoyed a four-peat on Saturday.
The Bucks won the Mid-Michigan Wrestling Conference tournament at home and took their fourth straight league wrestling crown.
The Bucks were first at 199.5 followed by Manistee at 162.5, Kingsley at 125.5, Benzie Central at 96.5, Manton at 91.5, Forest Area at 75.5, Mancelona at 66, Frankfort at 39 and Lake City at 5.
“We had some kids that had lost matches earlier in the season to boys from other schools but came back and got some wins,” said Pine River coach Tim Jones. “They helped us secure a conference championship.”
For Pine River, Tony Moore pinned David King-Bruner of Kingsley at 25 seconds to win the 103-pound division.
“Last year I wasn’t even on varsity, “Moore said. “I worked during the summer and during practice.”
Kyle Nixon pinned Mike Meadonws of Mancelona in 2:18 to win at 140 pounds. Larry Kissinger was first at 145 with a 3-2 win over David Engstrom of Manistee. Maverick Martin won at 145 with a 4-2 title victory over Hayden Codden of Manistee. Adam Langworthy took honors at 171 with a 9-5 title win over Brian Lark of Kingsley.
Robert Ragatzski took second at 112. Also runners-up were Darwin Dean at 125 pounds, Tom Miller at 189, Tyler McCurry at 215 and Kyle Charles at heavyweight.
“Dean had a nice day and Tyler McCurry had an excellent day,” Jones said.
Fourth places went to Chris Terburgh at 119 pounds, Brady Long at 135 and Cason Rawson at 160.
Jon Bailey led Manistee with a title at 112 pounds by pinning Ragatzski in 34 seconds. Jacob Williams won 19-3 over Demetrius Atwood for first place at 135 pounds. Adam Ball defeated Tyler McCurry of Pine River for first place at 215 pounds.
“Manistee’s pretty good,” Jones said. We knew they were strong..”
Pine River is home Thursday for team district action and at Manton on Saturday for the individual districts. Pine River wrestles Forest Area in the first round on Thursday and the Manton-Lake City winner the next round. Action starts at 6 p.m.
