EVART — Evart started off the night on a winning note in Mid-Michigan Wrestling Conference action on Wednesday.

But Pine River ended it with a win of its own.

Evart beat Kingsley 39-13 and Pine River topped Kingsley 69-10 in the night’s first two matches.

In the Pine River-Evart showdown, the Bucks prevailed 65-6.

“It was a big step up for us,” Evart coach Ryan Hopkins said. “We’ve been off with sick days and off with snow days. For one day of practice, we came out and wrestled very well. The boys are improving and getting better. We’re looking to be in pretty good position for conference and districts.”

The Wildcats got wins from Jared Beard, Garrett Johnson, Reese Ransom and Garrett Johnson for 21 points and forfeit victories for three other Wildcats in the win over Kingsley.

Ransom and Kinkade DuBreuil notched wins against Pine River.

Double-winners for Pine River were Seth Duncan (125), Jordan Koetje (130), Jalen Whipple (135), Austin Wuesten (160), Brock Nelson (171) Tim Rizor (189), Creed Watson (215) and Bryan McCurry (285).

“It was good to come over here and get a couple of conference wins,” Pine River coach Tim Jones said.

The MMWC will combine with the Highland Conference next year.

“So far so good,” Jones said. “We’re awfully young. We’re 13-5. We have a long way to go, but hopefully by the end of the season, that will be taken care of.”
