Pine River wrestlers net fourth straight district title
LEROY — It was quite a week for Pine River wrestling.
The Bucks won a team wrestling district and also qualified 11 individual wrestlers for the regionals this weekend.
Pine River defeated Manton 66-9 in the finals of the Division 4 wrestling team districts at Pine River on Thursday.
In the semifinals, Pine River beat Forest Area 58-9 and Manton topped Lake City 58-9.
The Bucks, 29-7, have won four straight districts.
Winners for the Bucks against Forest Area were Nathan Park, Brady Long, Kyle Nixon, Larry Kissinger, Maverick Martin, Justin Seeman, Jeff Gross, Josh Jackson and Chase Morrison.
Winners against Manton were Tony Moore, Chris Terburgh, Robert and Phil Ragatzki, Darwin Dean, Brady Long, Kyle Nixon, Larry Kissinger, Maverick Martin, Adam Langworthy, Tyler McCurry and Kyle Charles.
“We split them tonight so certain kids won certain matches,” said Pine River coach Tim Jones. “In the Manton match, our heavyweight got injured and ended with a pin. I tried to get him off the match. He’s a senior. It was an amazing battle of courage.”
Pine River, 29-7 advances to the team dual regionals 6 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 13 at a home. Their opponent is No. 2-ranked Hesperia.
At the individual districts, the Bucks that placed in the top four of their weight classes including Kyle Nixon at 140 and Larry Kissinger at 1354 with both taking first place. Maverick Martin at 152 and Adam Lanworthy at 171 were second place. Tony Moore, Robert Ragatzki 112, Brady Long 135, Cason Rawson 152, Justin Seeman at 160, Jeff Gross at 171 and Tom Miller at 189 were all fourth.
“Tom Miller went up against a couple of highly place wrestlers,” Jones said. “He did a nice job to get fourth place.”
