Pine River wrestlers nab second straight regional title

LEROY —  Pine River’s wrestling team went 2-0 last Wednesday to win its second straight Division 4 regional title.

In the semifinal, the Bucks beat Farwell 55-18 while Charlevoix topped Frankfort 51-18. In the final, Pine River prevailed 69-12.

The Bucks will wrestle in the state quarterfinal at noon this Friday at Central Michigan University.

“We were a little concerned with the Farwell match,” Pine River coach Tim Jones said. “But our lightweights were the driving force of that evening, ending with Tucker Fansler. That was the key to the whole match. We had to have those wins. Once we got those wins, you could see the sails swallow upon Farwell. That was the match, pretty much.”

Double-winners for the Bucks were Dylan Stevens (103), Tyler Signor (112), Andrew Park (119), Jaycob Roberts (125), Nathan Park (130), Joe Rigling (160), Josh Jackson (189), Brian McCurry (215) and Andrew Frisbie (285).

McCurry had a 5-2 decision and a first-period pin in the final.

“We were hot,” he said. “We knew Farwell would be good and we shot them down. We were on a roll, they couldn’t stop us. We’re young this year. It’s exciting to go.”

Pine River (24-4), seeded seventh, will wrestle Decator (27-3), seeded second, in the quarterfinal match. The winner advances to Saturday morning’s semifinal round. The final round is Saturday afternoon.

“The way we’re wrestling, I believe we’re in the mix,” Jones said. “We match up well against Decator and we’re excited about our chances. We have some kids that have been (into the state final).”
