Pine River volleyball team falls in semifinal round

MORLEY — Pine River lost in the semifinals of the Morley Stanwood Invitational on Saturday.

In pool play, the Bucks lost to Morley Stanwood 25-17, 25-20; and defeated Tri County 25-15, 25-23 and Carson City-Crystal 25-17, 25-23.

In the playoffs, Pine River defeated Cedar Springs 25-23, 18-25, 15-11 and lost to West Michigan Christian 25-23, 25-23.

For Pine River, Kyla Johnson had 32 kills, 46 digs and three blocks; KayLee Goodman had 24 kills, 37 digs and nine blocks; Julie Justin had 23 kills and 35 digs and Logan Powell had 96 assists and 39 digs.

“The girls played a solid day of volleyball,” Pine River coach Jana Dennis said. “They stayed united most of the day and accomplished many of the goals we set.” Our setter hitter communication is improving daily. We now need to revisit some of the little things that hurt us and get those ready for Tuesday.”

Pine River (15-20-7) was home Marion on Tuesday and is at McBain Northern Michigan Christian next Tuesday.

Pine River won at Manton on Oct. 5 in a straight sweep; 25-16, 25-19, 25-12.

Johnson had 10 kills and 13 digs; Justin collected 10 kills and nine digs; Goodman had six kills and 11 digs and Logan Powell had 32 assists and 11 digs.

“The girls came out with great intensity,” Dennis said. “We did a great job playing united. It was a complete team effort. We picked up right where we left off (Oct. 3) and that was nice to see.”
