Pine River volleyball juniors strive toward improvement
LEROY — It’s starting to get busy for Pine River volleyball players like Kyla Johnson and Tailor Charles.
Johnson will be a junior and has usually been a middle hitter.
“We’ve had a few open gyms, mainly working on basics, and with a lot of new girls we’re working on positioning,” she said. “We’re working on finding setters.”
Johnson said she played varsity last season, but added that it’s been helpful to have summer activity, especially with practice formally starting Aug. 13, followed by regular-season play.
“It helps to get to know the team,” Johnson said.
Team camp and a few scrimmages were scheduled this month and before the start of August practices.
Charles, a junior, also has been active in volleyball during the summer. She’s been emphasizing on back row passing and working with the team. Charles made her varsity debut last fall.
Summer volleyball “helps a lot,” she said. “It helps us before the season starts.”
With a year of varsity experience, Charles says she has more confidence.
High school players also worked at a youth camp in the Pine River gym last week.
“It’s to get them ready,” Charles said. “It kind of moves a little faster for them.”
Charles also has been playing summer softball. She’s been a third baseman and has been working to get ready for the spring season.
