LEROY — Pine River is at the Cadillac Invitational on Thursday as the track season continues.

The season opened on April 4 at Chippewa Hills. The boys lost 80-56 to Evart and 116-21 to Chippewa Hills.

"The boys' squad is full of young and first-year athletes," Pine River coach Eric Gebhard said. "Fortunately, we have a solid core of veteran athletes who will be able to lead the team in a great direction this year. Returning athletes to keep an eye on include sophomore Elijah Lewis, who will be returning after a very productive freshman season, competing in the sprints and jumping events.

"Senior captain Joe Rigling will continue to be the versatile athlete who can compete in a large number of events and get us points where needed. Senior Hunter Esline will give us some great depth in the sprints and jumping events."

Lewis won the 200 meters at Chippewa Hills in 23.5 seconds and the high jump at 5 feet, 8 inches.

Pine River girls beat Evart 84-38 and lost to Chippewa Hills 103-34.

"The girls' squad is a more veteran one, with a strong returning group of athletes," Gebhard said. "Senior captain Anna Lindquist will be a strong presence in the middle distance runs, as well as the pole vault. Sophomore Logan Powell is looking great early in the season and will be a strong force in the sprint and middle distance races.

"Freshman Becca Horan is new to the team, but already showing that she has the potential to make her mark in the sprints and middle distance events. This group will have the ability to score points in nearly every event at big meets, and should be fun to watch throughout the season."
