Pine River track girls take third at regionals
CLARE — The Pine River girls were the runners-up at the Division 3 track regional at Clare, scoring 94 points. Clare won with 125 points.
The girls qualified in six events. Shiloh Ruppert, Michelle Kelsey, Jasmine Blackrick and Devyn Powell were regional champions in the 4x200 and 4x100 relays. Powell was also first in the 400 meters (1:00.44) and Kelsey was also first in the high jump (5-0). Mary Ware qualified with second-place tosses in both throws in the shot (30-9 ½) and in the discus with a personal best of 105-9.
“These girls have worked hard all season and are getting their reward,” Pine River coach Jan Burch said. “Six other girls chipped in with important points. We scored in 15 of 17 events, so it was a great team effort. I couldn’t be prouder of the girls.”
On the boys’ side, Pine River finished in sixth place. State qualifiers on the day included regional champion Ethan Crawford in the 110 hurdles, Cole Gingrich in the 100-meter dash and Ben Rigling in the 800-meter run. The 800 relay team of Rigling, Gingrich, Colten Rawson, and Robert Dagen also ran well and placed for the Bucks.
“The team did a great job of competing against some tough competition,” Pine River boys coach Eric Gebhard said. “We will have some great representation again this year at the state level, and look forward to carrying our momentum into the conference finals (Tuesday of this week).”
The Division 3 state finals for the Bucks is May 31 at Comstock Park.
