LEROY — Pine River’s softball team swept Kent City 4-3 and 7-3 on Thursday.

Pine River scored two runs in the top of the sixth on a single by Jandney Mattson and two runs the top of the seventh on a triple by Christie Nelson.

Kent City scored two runs the bottom of the sixth.

Miranda Nelson was the winning pitcher. Jamie Justin had two hits. Brooke Sebastiano had a double. Christie Nelson added two hits.

Miranda Nelson was also the winning pitcher in the second game, throwing a three-hitter and three walks while striking out seven.

Sebastiano had two hits including a triple while Cayman Gatt had a triple.

“We did good, we went back to basics a little bit and came out hitting the ball on Thursday,” said Pine River coach Laura Mumby. “We went a long ways south but got some decent weather and got some games in.”

Pine River (6-3) plays at St. Louis on Saturday.

BASEBALL

Pine River improved to 5-0 on Thursday with 25-0 and 15-1 wins over Kent City on the road.

Nick Warner was the winning pitcher in the first game. In seven innings, he allowed six hits and three walks and fanned 11. Kyle Brock had two hits for Pine River.

Lincoln Erickson was the winning pitcher in the second game, going five innings and allowing two hits and no walks. He fanned seven batters. Hastings, Warner and Devin Ruppert had two hits apiece.

“Our pitching has been good and I’ve been fairly happy with our defense,” said Pine River coach Shawn Ruppert. “I’m sure we’ll find out some places where we need some work.”

Pine River is scheduled to play Traverse City West on Thursday and is at Big Rapids on Saturday.
