Pine River takes Reed City wrestling title
LEROY — Pine River enjoyed six first-places, three seconds and a fourth to take first place as a wrestling team at Saturday’s Reed City Invitational.
Bryan McCurry took first place at 215 pounds,
“I wrestled well,” he said. “I beat the kid in the finals by a point the last time and beat him by six or seven today. We have a tough schedule. There’s more losses than last year but they’re against quality teams and we’re getting ready for March.”
McCurry has won more than 30 matches this season.
“Everyone would like to be 40-0, but with our schedule it’s tough and I’ve lost some close matches,” he said
He had a sweet win against Manton’s Spencer Park in the finals at Reed City 10-5.
“I’m working on more shots than I usually do,” McCurry said. “Everyone’s goal is to make it to the state meet. We have to put it all together.”
Also taking first was Jacob Roberts, a senior, at 130.
It’s his fourth year of wrestling.
Technique wise, it’s his best year he said.
“I’ll wrestled a lot of good people,” he said. “Being on top and getting out of bottom and getting out of escapes have been strengths,” he said.
He wants to improve on neutral position and get more takedown.
Memorable moments included last year at team state against Clinton when he got a big win plus some strong performances this season at Marquette. He’s hoping his team can do well at the state meet.
Also first were Caleb Nolf (103), Andy Park (140) and Brock Nelson (145).
Getting seconds for the Bucks were Dylan Stephens (119). Tyler Signor (125) and Tomas Hoker (135). Malachi Holmes (152) was fourth.
