Pine River sweeps Crossroads in softball twinbill

BIG RAPIDS — Pine River had four games under its belt and took advantage in a 9-7 and 4-2 non-league sweep on April 12 over Crossroads Charter Academy, which was making its season debut.

Alexis Bennett was the winning pitcher for Pine River in the opener and Kourtney Brock got the win in the nightcap.

Mackenzie Cole took the loss for CCA in the opener

“We had a lot of bunt singles, it seemed like,” Cougar coach Amanda Brown said.

The Bucks had 12 hits compared to three for CCA in the opener. Pine River had no errors.

Bennett fanned 14 batters, but allowed 13 walks.

Taylor Hill had two hits for the Bucks. Bennett, Bekah Dean and Trowbridge had two hits apiece. Pine River also continues to look for game experience.

Coach Laura Mumby said the hitting attack was diversified and complemented the solid performance of her two hurlers.

“We had a couple small victories tonight,” Mumby said. “Our pitching really came along tonight in a couple ways, Alexis Bennett’s strikeouts were impressive tonight and Kourtney Brock limiting walks in the second game kept us in the game.

“Cayla Trowbridge had a great night at the plate and Madison Marks rallied for a few key hits, too.”

Dean and Trowbridge had two hits apiece. Brock fanned five batters and only walked two.

Manistee 5-15, Pine River 3-5

MANISTEE — Manistee defeated Pine River 5-3 in the first game of a non-league doubleheader on April 17. Brock and Emily Treiber had two hits apiece for the Bucks. Losing pitcher Bennett fanned 12 batters and walked nine.

Manistee won the second game 15-5. Manistee out-hit the Bucks 12-5 and took advantage of seven Pine River errors. Cayla Trowbridge had a hit and two RBI for the Bucks.

Brock was the losing pitcher.

“Our game one was a great game that we came up short in,” Mumby said. “We out-hit them and played tough against a really good pitcher. It was a tough loss, but I was proud of our fight.”

Pine River is home Wednesday against Big Rapids.
