Pine River summer baseball team sneaks past Reed City

LEROY —  Pine River used a four-run first inning to slip past Reed City 7-5 on Friday in a summer high school baseball game.

The two teams played one nine-inning game.

Reed City, which swept Evart on Wednesday, 4-2 and 16-15, is 2-1 this summer. It was the Bucks’ first summer game.

“I thought we got better as the game progressed,” Pine River coach Shawn Ruppert said. “We looked better. I was happy with the guys. We haven’t had a practice.”

Starting pitcher Logan Straub went the first five innings for the visitors, while Hunter Morrison and Leland Yonkin pitched in relief.

Straub had three hits, including two doubles. Jeffery Phenix added two hits, while Derek Rasor contributed a hit.

Mason Powell delivered a RBI triple late in the game to seal Pine River’s win. Dillon Loop had two singles, while Matt Goodenow delivered a RBI double. Grant Ruppert and Nick Shimel both had singles.

“I thought we played well,” Reed City assistant coach Jesse Rolston said. “We had a rough first inning. Logan is going to be a junior. We should have had a couple of outs for him. We didn’t make them.”

Schaub had nine strikeouts.

“I thought he recovered pretty well,” Rolston said. “We had some hits behind him.”

Shimel went two innings on the mound, while Ruppert and Powell went three innings apiece. Goodenow also saw mound action.

“We had a lot of young kids, and I thought they all did well,” Ruppert said.

In Reed City’s sweep over Evart, Alex Brummel had two singles and Bryce Grannis had a double in the first game. Cameron Austin, Alex Brummel, Grannis, Cody Kailing, Quinton Kichak, Gabe Miller and Rasor had two hits apiece.

“We’re young,” Rolston said. “I think we only have one senior here. We’re getting them to play baseball. The more games, the better you become.”

Pine River is slated to play home on June 28 against Evart but may have another game sometime this week, Ruppert said.
